The fastest way to improve your scores is to get to work on the
practice green
1 and 2
Keep on Holing
Place a tee peg into the ground a foot away from the cup. Then
place five more on the same line at intervals of 12 inches.
You will need six ball for this drill. Start with the tee nearest
to the hole, one after the other. When you have succeeded, move
back to the next peg. If at any time you miss a putt, then you
have to start the whole drill again. It sounds difficult, and
it is. But it will teach you to concentrate. And because all
of the putts are in the same line, you won't have to worry about
reading new breaks as you get further away.
3 and 4
Time for Tee
A very basic drill, but none the less effective for it. Aiming
putt after putt at such a small target will mean that once you
get on the course, the hole will look as big as a bucket.
5 and 6
Putting between the Lines
This drill will improve your stroke. When you first try it,
you may find yourself hitting the wooden stakes but very quickly
you'll find your stroke becomes grooved and it becomes second
nature to swing between the lines.
7 and 8
Speed Restrictions
The object of the drill is to improve your control of pace.
Tees should be placed at regular three foot intervals from the
hole and the stake is placed 18 inches behind the hole. Use
three balls and try to leave each putt between the hole and
the white stake, or better still in the hole. When you have
succeeded from the first tee peg, move back to the next.
Sarah's Secrets
Spend an hour practising these drills and I promise you'll reap
the benefits. They'll help you judge weight better when putting
from distance and they'll help you hole out from short range. Confidence
is critical to putting and apart from teaching muscle memory, you'll
also feel stronger mentally after watching the ball go into the
hole time after time.
